Jobs Minister Intervenes in Canada Post Dispute as G7 Summit Looms
Ottawa, Ontario – Canada’s Minister of Jobs and Families, Patty Hajdu, today announced her decision to “exercise my authority” to force a vote on Canada Post’s final offers to the mail carriers’ union, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW). This intervention comes after 18 months of negotiations, over 200 meetings, 33 days of strikes, and a lockout in the fall. Hajdu stated in an online statement that a vote is “in the public interest,” responding to Canada Post’s request to compel a vote. The union, however, is reportedly against such a move.
