Early Morning Explosion Rocks Regina’s Co-op Refinery, Rattles Neighborhood

An early morning explosion at Regina’s Consumers’ Co-operative Refinery sent shockwaves through the city’s north end, awakening residents and causing significant alarm on Tuesday.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:45 a.m. CST near gate No. 3 on 9th Avenue North near McDonald Street. Emergency alarm horns blared across the neighborhood for over 15 minutes, signaling the severity of the incident.

Refinery spokesperson Andrew Swenson confirmed that the situation has been brought under control. “The incident has been contained and the impacted area has been stabilized,” Swenson stated in an emailed statement.

Two employees are currently being assessed for minor injuries, and all personnel have been accounted for. The Regina Fire Department was called to assist the refinery’s own firefighting team, working alongside refinery staff to manage the emergency.

By 6 a.m. CST, firefighters were still burning off extra product in the lines, though officials emphasized that no high-pressure lines were involved in the fire. No additional structures were damaged during the explosion.

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation. Local residents are advised to stay informed through official channels as more details emerge.
